Plumbing, ventilation, electrical distribution and the hot water plant sit in one factory finished cube at the centre of the plan.

A compact three by three footprint has less external wall per square metre, so a well sealed envelope does more with less.

How it works

From a 9 square grid to a finished home

  1. 1. Set the grid

    Start from the fixed three by three plan. Choose which of the eight outer modules are living, sleeping, service or outdoor space.

  2. 2. Build the core

    The utility core is assembled and tested off site, arriving as one unit with services terminated and ready to connect.

  3. 3. Assemble on site

    Modules land around the core on a prepared slab or screw pile foundation, so wet trades and site time both shrink.

  4. 4. Adapt over time

    Because every module shares a dimension, a household can reconfigure rooms or add a second storey grid later.

Energy efficiency

Shorter runs, tighter envelope, less waste

Putting every service in the middle of the plan means no module is more than one step from hot water, ventilation or power.

  • Shorter plumbing runs

    Kitchen and bathroom modules sit against the core, so hot water arrives quickly and less heat is lost in the pipe.

  • Simpler electrical distribution

    One distribution point in the middle of the plan means shorter cable routes and fewer penetrations through the envelope.

  • Better thermal performance

    A compact square plan has less external wall for the same floor area, and the warm core sits inside the insulated envelope rather than on an outside wall.

  • Balanced ventilation

    Supply and extract runs radiate the same short distance to every module, which makes commissioning a repeatable exercise.

About the name

9 squares, and an old unit of length

9 Cubits takes its name from a low energy house design based on 9 squares in a three by three grid, with eight living modules arranged around a central utility core.

A cubit is also an ancient unit of length, measured from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger. It is a reminder that useful dimensions have always been drawn from the human body, and that a plan works when its measurements suit the people inside it.

Put together, the name says exactly what the system is: a set number of modules, measured on a human scale.
